So, I believe the list for this Tuesday is 2016 debut novels we are looking forward to, but we also included other books we are most looking forward to reading in 2016 when they are released (in addition to the backlog from 2015).

Weekend Coffee Share: The Post-Thanksgiving Coma

If we were having coffee, I would tell you all about our recent Thanksgiving activities.  If you celebrated Thanksgiving, I’d ask you how your Thanksgiving festivities went as well.  We’ll talk about all the wonderful food we ate, and how we are going to eat healthier promptly on Monday.  No sense in starting now with all the leftovers and cookie dough in the refrigerator.

Pretty Neat

Sass and Sauce has told us that we’re pretty neat and nominated us for the Real Neat Blog award.  Ms. Sassy is pretty neat too!

Thanks Sass and Sauce!
Thanks Sass and Sauce!

As part of the award, Sass and Sauce asked us some questions.  Here are our answers:

  1. Would you like to relocate to Hogwarts, Narnia, Middle Earth, or Westeros? That’s a tough one, but Cam and I both agreed that, assuming we would get to learn to be wizards, Hogwarts.  Cam also added that Middle Earth would be second best, as long as it was Fourth Age.
  2. What is the most hilarious way you have dumped someone/ been dumped? Neither of us had a funny story for this, but I am still friends with some former exes.  Cam now works with one, and it’s probably not awkward at all…
  3. What is your favourite attire? Cam says jeans, a graphic tee, and a hoodie.  I say sweats are good enough for me if I could get away with wearing them everywhere.
  4. What is the one food item that you cannot live without?  Cam says pizza, no question.  I say ice cream, or any veggie I raise in my own garden.  There’s nothing like cooking with what you grow in your own backyard.
  5. Your best birthday ever! Cam says the birthday he most loves is the one where we went on a mini vacation to St. Louis after we first met.  We had a great time at the City Museum.  It was probably then that we realized we could go on a trip without killing each other, even when we got lost on the way home.  I spent about four birthdays in Africa, so any of them, or the first one I spent with my family when I came home.  It was the big 3-0, and it was great to finally spend that day with my family for once.

As part of accepting this award, we nominate a few other blogs that we think are pretty neat.

  1. Shawn Writes Stuff
  2. Faraday’s Candle
  3. Badfish Out of Water
  4. The Boardwalk Games
  5. TriSARAHtops

We would love if they accepted, but we also understand if they aren’t really into this sort of thing.  Obviously, we think all of the blogs we follow are pretty neat.  They’re fun to read, thought-provoking, and informative.  As part of this challenge, we also have questions for our nominees if they want to participate.

  1. If you could meet any fictional character, who would it be and why?
  2. What the most memorable place you’ve ever traveled too?
  3. What’s your favorite board/card/video game?
  4. Describe your perfect weekend?
  5. Why did you want to start blogging in the first place?

Call My Bluff

When you starting playing board games regularly, you’ll eventually develop the skills needed to succeed.  Strategy, planning, cooperation are all things you’ll need to hone when you start your board game hobby.  Bluffing and deceit are also key skills in certain games.  Cooperative games are becoming quite popular, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up your poker face.  Bluffing games will still remain as top favorites.

Top Ten Tuesday – Thanksgiving

So, we have decided that Top Ten Tuesday is probably our favorite weekly link-up out there at the moment.  We love lists.  We love books.  Who doesn’t love lists, especially about books?

Anyway, we picked the perfect week to start participating.  It’s a Thanksgiving freebie week.  So, in participating, Cam and I will share the list, hopefully an even split for most of the time.  For the first list, we had some overlap when making our lists, but managed to split it evenly.

The Idiot

How does one review a piece of classic Russian literature without looking like, well, an idiot?  Doubtful that I can avoid that, I’ll first say that I didn’t really enjoy The Idiot as much as I enjoyed Crime and Punishment. If I were to recommend a Dostoevsky book, it would be Crime and Punishment instead of The Idiot.  It took me quite a while to make it through this book, while putting it down for another book on multiple occasions.  At least I can cross this classic off my list.

Weekend Coffee Share – International Suicide Survivors Day

AFSP_ISOSLD_logo-200x200-e1417445774523If we were having coffee, I’d first thank you for meeting up with me and invite you to tag along to a couple of events I’ll be in attendance today.

First is an event hosted by a friend in recognition of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, which is today.  There’s going to be a screening of a film produced by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention called Family Journeys: Healing and Hope after a Suicide.  I believe she also has a speech prepared.  I am happy she is able to bring attention to this issue in our community by hosting.  She’s done a great job so far.  I do hope it will continue year after year.  You can learn more about it here and sign up for the event in your own community.

Unfortunately, I’ll probably have to duck out early to head to my friends’ house for a birthday party for their 1 year old.  I can’t believe it’s already been one year!  He’s gotten so big.  The theme is How to Train Your Dragon, and hopefully, he’ll wear his Toothless Halloween costume at least long enough for me to get a picture since we missed him on Halloween.

If we were having coffee, I’d also invite you to come back this evening to help us put together some raised garden beds for the backyard.  Don’t worry, dinner would be provided. Our previous garden beds did not stand up well to two playful pups, so reinforcements and fencing is needed to keep next year’s veggies firmly rooted in the ground.

If we were having coffee, I’d ask you what your plans are for Thanksgiving, and I’d share mine.  We’ll be travelling to both of our parents’ houses for a meal, and hopefully we can squeeze in a little celebration of our own.  I’ve already volunteered our house for my family Christmas celebration.  Next weekend, you’re invited to come decorate with me.

We would laugh about how I finally surpassed 10,000 words for NaNoWriMo, and joke about trying again next year.  At least I’ve been reading more now that the weather has finally turned cold.  I am writing more, too, just not at the pace that my fellow WriMos are.  I still intend to finish.

overtureI am excited to tell you I finally received Sandman: Overture.  It was supposed to be a Christmas present, but Cam guessed what it was by Amazon’s not so subtle package.  He promised not to touch it until Christmas.  Like he has time anyway, with finals coming up and a CompTia exam scheduled in December.

I hate to rush off so soon, but we’ll see each other again next week.  And I’ll see you in about an hour at WKU’s Health Complex to learn more about supporting survivors of suicide.  Now, I’m off to buy a birthday present.  I believe my discount at the book store has come in handy this time of year.
